Poltergeists can be an absolutely frightening experience for a family or someone who is experiencing this type of phenomena. To quote the legendary ghost hunter Harry Price - poltergeists are "destructive, noisy, mischievous, cruel, demonstrative, purposeless, erratic, cunning, thievish, unhelpful, audacious, malicious, teasing, spiteful, ill-disposed, ruthless, resourceful and vampiric".

The most common way for a poltergeist to begin is through scratching and knocking to be heard around the house. Communication can be made with a simple "one knock for YES and two knocks for NO" method. The investigator or house owner can find out "yes and no" answers through this process, by asking a question out loud and listening for the coded answer back. Perhaps even a little game can be played by knocking on the wall a certain number of times, and having the poltergeist knock back the same number of knocks. It has been noted that normally at first the knocking sound will come from another room in the house, rather than the room in which the people or investigator are located. The knocking and scratching could then start sounding as if it is inside the room itself, such as on the headboard of the bed, or the wall inside the room and perhaps even the ceiling or roof.

A normal ghost can only move very light objects, whereas a poltergeist has strength beyond that which it normally displays, which is enough to pick up heavy fridges, couches, beds, cabinets and tables and then move them, overturn, throw around rooms and make dance in front of people. Even though a poltergeist can and does destroy a house by ripping holes in the walls and throwing things with great force, it is often said that if a poltergeist were to use the full force of its strength, the damage would be devestating. There are reports of cars being picked up and moved thirty meters away without any wheel marks leading through muddy ground, and concrete slabs, which would normally take four men to lift, being overturned .

Very common among poltergeist cases are showers of rocks and stones. This can be in the surrounding area of the affected house, the house itself and also inside the house. While not all seem to be aimed at people, it is often that somebody will be hit at least once during such an attack. The victims have rarely reported being hurt, but rather said they were softly hit.

Coins and perhaps household objects could be used in these attacks. It is common for the coins to come from elsewhere than from the house itself. A textbook example of poltergeist activity is coins being thrown inside the house. It is unknown why, but poltergeists love to collect coins and throw them when least expected. The coins sometimes date back many years and are normally hot to the touch when holding a coin that has just been thrown. The oldest coin I have is an 1845 coin from England. It is dangerous to handle objects thrown by a poltergeist because they can follow you through a link if you place your energy on the object.

After picking up an object that has been thrown or teleported into the house by unknown means, it is noted that the object normally feels hot to the touch. Witnesses have stated that the missiles have just "appeared" from nowhere when spotted just under ceiling level. This would indicate that they were somehow materialized into the house by unknown means. Usually these objects are not actually seen materializing, but rather seen in mid-flight or hitting the ground.

Spontaneous fires are also a common threat from the poltergeist, although it is rare that a house has ever burnt down because of them. Some people have stated that the fires look "controlled" or "concentrated", sometimes with no visible burn marks. Having fires break out inside the house would leave the house owners under an enormous amount of extra stress.

In time, the poltergeist may start to develop a voice, as reported in other poltergeist cases. Sounds are made initially only. If an investigator asks the poltergeist to bark like a dog, then a barking sound will be made, or if asked to sound like a saw sawing a piece of wood, then that exact sound will be made. After this, for some reason the poltergeist starts a type of whistling which eventually evolves into a proper voice. Witnesses have stated that at first the poltergeist was trying to talk to them through whistling and huff's and puffs, in a very high-pitched voice, some octaves higher than normal, eventually achieving a more natural human voice. The voice is often gravelly or rough like an old man's.

A poltergeist can stay anywhere from a few hours to a few years in its existence, then just as suddenly as it started, it may cease. (A couple of cases have shown that a poltergeist has returned at some point after its initial visit, when it stayed a much shorter time than originally. Although it may not continually keep coming back forever.)

It is interesting to note that in many cases a poltergeist will centre or focus itself on a young girl under the age of twenty, normally one who is going through puberty. However males and people older then twenty have also been the focus. Also with most, or at least a high percentage of cases, the focus has some type of emotional baggage which could be stress, anger, hidden fears or phobias, just to mention a few.

Whatever your views are on a poltergeist, it is safe to assume that a poltergeist thrives on tension. If you eliminate the tension, then you will eliminate the poltergeist. Now, there are two common links on which you may or may not base your opinion of what constitutes a poltergeist. It could either be a malevolent, mischievous or even demonic spirit or some type of mass subconscious psycho-kinesis (PK) on behalf of the focus.

The second theory is that since the focus has some form of emotional baggage described above, then they have un-knowingly created the poltergeist with their own subconscious mind in the form of mass psycho-kinesis. In other words the poltergeist has been generated internally from the person themselves, enabling them to move things with their mind.

Although it has been scientifically proven that some people can possess the power of psycho kinesis, which is moving things with the mind, these people have only been able to bend spoons and lift or move light objects; not fridges, cars and solid oak cabinets that a poltergeist likes to exhibit.

Also in just about every case where communication has been made, the poltergeist has known things that could not possibly be known by the focus. Such as one reported case where an investigator has placed his hand in his pocket and asked the poltergeist to knock on the wall how many fingers he has stretched out, which the entity did many times correctly. The poltergeist can even know peoples' hidden secrets, which is called "special or advanced knowledge" among poltergeist investigators.

Spirits use energy, so when the focus has discharged some negative energy through a high amount of tension, such as stress, a malevolent spirit becomes attracted and dwells. It is also the reason why this person then becomes the focus of the poltergeist. The more the poltergeist can torment the family, then the more tension is created. So when spontaneous fires and disembodied voices start occurring inside the house, this adds to the advantage of the poltergeist as the focus creates more and more fear and tension within themselves. As said before, poltergeists generally cannot survive without some form of tension.

A poltergeist haunting starts and ends very suddenly. The reason for this could be that when the malevolent spirit has been attracted to the negative energy, it only stays as long as the energy is present. So when the focus seeks help or has overcome their emotional baggage, the energy then ceases, and the poltergeist seeks a new place to dwell.
